The Standard Chartered plc is an intercontinental British banking and finance service company, founded by James Wilson with a royal charter, with its headquarters in London, England. This bank deals with a large nexus of more than 1,000 branches across several countries and has a staff strength of over 80,000 people.
The Standard Chartered Bank is universal and its operations range from end user to concerted and established banking, and revenue services.
In the year 1965, the Standard Bank of South Africa amalgamated with the Bank of West Africa, which licensed it to own businesses, which included a banking operation platform in Nigeria. The name was thereafter altered to Standard Bank of West Africa.
About four years after the amalgamation, Standard Bank Nigeria was integrated to take over the business locally in Nigeria, and 13% of the share capital was placed with Nigerian investors in the year 1971.
After the end of the civil war, a crucial pecuniary upturn transpired and a consequence of this saw the military government try to intensify home control over the retail-banking sector, and this reduced the Bank’s investment in Standard Bank Nigeria (renamed First Bank of Nigeria in 1979 to 38%.
The Standard Chartered Bank rebounded to Nigeria in the year 1999 and finally opened to customers on September 15, 1999 as a fully owned ancillary of Standard Chartered Bank Plc, with its headquarters in the United Kingdom.
Today, the bank has grown massively and now offers services and products in commerce, retail, funds management, and a host of other services. Also, the Standard Chartered Bank employs over 800 staff and maintains Nigeria as its growth epicenter, with several branches and ATMs in each branch, in various states across the country.
