Access bank of Nigeria

Access Bank plc, popularly known as Access Bank is a Nigerian commercial bank owned by Access Bank Group. The Bank is licensed by the CBN (Central Bank Of Nigeria)

The bank is originally a corporate bank which was expanded into personal and business banking in year 2012. Diamond Bank and Access Bank  merged on 1st of April 2019. Access Bank unveiled its new logo showing the commencement of a new enlarged banking entity. 

After being merged with more than 42 million of customers, Access Bank  became the largest bank in Africa with the largest customer base and also the largest bank in Nigeria by asset.

In September 2021, Access Bank has subsidiaries in Ghana, Mozambique, Congo, Sierra Leone, Zambia, Rwanda, Kenya, Gambia, South Africa, and also in the UK.

The bank also maintains representative offices in India, China, UAE and Lebanon.

Access bank got licensed in 1989 by the Central Bank Of Nigeria and listed on the Nigeria stock exchange in 1998.

In year 2002, the Bank was taken over by a new management led by Herbert Wigwe and Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede.

In year 2005, the Bank acquired Marina Bank and Capital Bank by merging.

In year 2007, the  Bank established a subsidiary in Gambia and Banjul. Access bank now has a head office and four branches.

In year 2008, the Bank got 88% of the shares of Omnifinance Bank that was established in 1996. It also got 90% of Banque Privée du Congo, which South African investors had established in year 2002. Access Bank got 75% of the shares of Bancor SA, in Rwanda. Bancor was established in 1995 and got reorganised in 2001. In September, Access Bank opened a new subsidiary in Sierra Leone and Freetown then in October, the bank opened another subsidiaries in Zambia, Lusaka and in United Kingdom.

In year 2008, Finbank in Burundi joined the Access Bank network but exited the group in 2014.

In year 2011, Access Bank hold a meeting with the Central Bank of Nigeria to acquire Intercontinental Bank plc.

In October 2020, Access Bank receives regulatory approval to establish Access Bank in Mozambique. It was also announced that the Group will be transforming into a Holding Company and entering South Africa.
